Thomas Garrett Junior

Thomas A. Garrett (* 27. March 1972 in Atlanta , Georgia ) is an American politician of the Republican Party . From 2017 to 2019 he represented the center of the State of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Family, education and work

Thomas Garrett graduated from Louisa County High School in Virginia. From 1990 he studied at the University of Richmond and graduated there in 1994 with a bachelor's degree in history and education. Between 1995 and 2000 he served in the United States Army , where he rose to the rank of captain. He was used in Bosnia , among other places . For his military achievements he received, among other things, the Army Achievement Medal . He returned to the University of Richmond in 2000 and studied at their Law School , which he graduated with a Juris Doctor in 2002 . In 2002, he became assistant attorney general in Virginia. In 2008, he became a Louisa County attorney . He then worked as a finance manager for Spidersfans Incorporated .

Garrett has two children.

politics

In 2004/05 Garrett was political director of Bob McDonnell's election campaign . Between 2012 and 2016, Garrett was a member of the Virginia Senate for the 22nd constituency . In the 2016 election , Garrett was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the fifth congressional constituency of Virginia against the Democrat Jane Dittmar , where he succeeded Robert Hurt , who was no longer running in 2016, on January 3, 2017 . Garrett joined the right-wing Freedom Caucus after campaigning against it and sparked criticism with a March 2017 photo of him meeting the organizer of the right-wing extremist demonstrations in Charlottesville in 2017 . A year after the riot, which left one person dead, Garrett said he learned from security sources that Russian interference had taken place.

In May 2018, following the resignation of his chief of staff, allegations were raised by employees that he had treated them like personal service personnel. After public hesitation, Garrett announced in late May 2018 that he was an alcoholic and would not run again in the 2018 House of Representatives election. Two congressional investigations were launched against him in July 2018. His constituency, which encompasses large parts of the center of the state, has a Cook Partisan Voting Index of R + 6, so structurally a slight Republican advantage.

In the November 2018 election, Republican Denver Riggleman prevailed against Democrat Leslie Cockburn with 52 percent of the vote . Garrett resigned from Congress on January 3, 2019.
