Andrew S. Fulton

Andrew Steele Fulton (born September 29, 1800 in Waynesboro , Virginia , †  November 22, 1884 in Austinville , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1847 and 1849 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Andrew Fulton was the younger brother of Congressman John H. Fulton (1792-1836). He attended public schools in his home country and Hampden-Sydney College . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer in 1825, he began to work in Abingdon in this profession. In 1828 he moved his residence and law firm to Wytheville . He later embarked on a political career as a member of the Whig Party . He served in the Virginia House of Representatives in 1840 and 1845 . He also became a district attorney in Wythe County .

In the 1846 congressional election , Fulton was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the 13th  constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded George Washington Hopkins on March 4, 1847 . Since he refused to run again in 1848, he was only able to complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1849 . This was shaped by the events of the Mexican-American War . During his tenure in Congress, Fulton chaired the Disability Pension Committee.

After his time in the US House of Representatives, he practiced as a lawyer again. Between 1852 and 1869 he was a judge in the 15th Judicial District of Virginia. He died on November 22, 1884 near Austinville.
