John Ambler Smith

John Ambler Smith (born September 23, 1847 in Dinwiddie County , Virginia , †  January 6, 1892 in Washington, DC ) was an American politician . Between 1873 and 1875 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

John Smith attended his home public schools and David Turner's High School in Richmond . After a subsequent law degree at Richmond College and his 1867 admission as a lawyer, he began in Richmond to work in this profession. He also acted as a district attorney. It was then that he became a member of the Republican Party . In 1869 he was elected to the Virginia Senate.

In the congressional election of 1872 Smith was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington in the third constituency of Virginia, where he succeeded Charles H. Porter on March 4, 1873 . Since he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party in 1874, he could only complete one legislative period in Congress until March 3, 1875 . After his time in the US House of Representatives, John Smith practiced as a lawyer again. He also became a member of an immigration commission. He died on January 6, 1892 in the federal capital Washington.
