Joseph Whitehead (born October 31, 1867 in Pittsylvania County , Virginia , †  July 8, 1938 in Chatham , Virginia) was an American politician . Between 1925 and 1931 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Joseph Whitehead attended the public schools of his home country and then studied until 1889 at Richmond College , the later University of Richmond . After a subsequent law degree at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville and his admission to the bar in 1892, he began to work in Chatham in this profession. At the same time he embarked on a political career as a member of the Democratic Party . Between 1899 and 1904 he was a member of the Virginia Senate .

In the 1924 congressional election , Whitehead was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the fifth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded J. Murray Hooker on March 4, 1925 . After two re-elections, he was able to complete three legislative terms in Congress by March 3, 1931 . In 1930 he was no longer nominated for re-election by his party. After his time in the US House of Representatives, Joseph Whitehead practiced law again. He died on July 8, 1938 in Chatham, where he was also buried.
