James Randolph "Jim" Olin (born February 28, 1920 in Chicago , Illinois , †  July 29, 2006 in Charlottesville , Virginia ) was an American politician . Between 1983 and 1993 he represented the state of Virginia in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Jim Olin attended Deep Springs College in California until 1941 . He then studied at Cornell University in Ithaca ( New York ) until 1943 . During World War II , he served in the Army Signal Corps between 1943 and 1946 . After the war he became mayor ( supervisor ) of the city of Rotterdam . In 1953 he was a member of the Schenectady County County Council . From 1947 to 1982 he worked in various senior management positions at General Electric . Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party .

In the 1982 congressional election , Olin was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the sixth constituency of Virginia , where he succeeded M. Caldwell Butler on January 3, 1983 . After four re-elections, he was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress by January 3, 1993 . In 1992 he renounced another candidacy. After serving in the US House of Representatives, Jim Olin retired. He died on July 29, 2006 in Charlottesville. He had five children with his wife, Phyllis Avery.
