Josiah Robins "Jo" Bonner Jr. (born November 19, 1959 in Selma , Alabama ) is an American politician . He is a member of the Republican Party and represented the first congressional constituency of the state of Alabama in the US House of Representatives from 2003 to 2013 .

Jo Bonner earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 1982 . Afterwards he studied for some time at the law school of this university. From 1985 to 2002 he was on the staff of Congressman Sonny Callahan . When he was no longer running, Bonner applied for his successor as his closest colleague. He won the election and moved to Congress on January 3, 2003 , to which he was a member until August 2, 2013 after multiple re-elections. In the 112th Congress , he chaired the Ethics Committee of the House of Representatives.

In May 2013 it became known that Bonner was taking on a position at the University of Alabama and is therefore withdrawing from the House of Representatives, which has met with criticism because of the high salary and because his sister Judy Bonner is president of this university.
