William M. Lowe

William Manning Lowe (born June 12, 1842 in Huntsville , Alabama , † October 12, 1882 there ) was an American lawyer, officer and politician .

Career

William Lowe attended Wesleyan University in Florence, Alabama and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . When the Civil War broke out, he enlisted in the Confederate Army , where he last held the rank of Lieutenant Colonel . He studied law , got his lawyer license, and then started practicing in Huntsville. Between 1865 and 1867 he was a solicitor in the 5th judicial district.

Lowe also had a political career. He was a member of the Alabama House of Representatives in 1870 and took part in the Constituent Assembly as a delegate in 1875 . He was then elected to the 46th Congress for the Greenback Party , where he performed his mandate between March 4, 1879 and March 3, 1881. Lowe successfully contested the subsequent election of Joseph Wheeler to the 47th Congress, serving on his Huntsville estate, The Grove, from June 3, 1882 until his death that same year . He was buried in Maple Hill Cemetery .
