Joachim Latacz (born April 4, 1934 in Katowice ) is a German classical philologist .

Life and research

Joachim Latacz passed his Abitur in 1953 at the Latina of the Francke Foundations in Halle an der Saale . From 1953 to 1956 he studied Classical Philology , Indo-European Studies , Ancient History and Archeology at the Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg . From 1956 to 1960 he continued his studies in the subjects of Classical Philology, Ancient History, Indo-European Studies , Slavic Studies and Philosophy at the Free University of Berlin , where he passed his first state examination in 1960. From 1960 to 1966 he was a research assistant at the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae under Bruno Snell and Hartmut Erbse at the University of Hamburg .

In 1963 he was awarded a doctorate by Uvo Hölscher at the Free University of Berlin. phil. PhD. In 1972 he completed his habilitation (valued and supported by Ernst Siegmann ) at the University of Würzburg for Classical Philology and was appointed associate professor there in 1978. Shortly afterwards he accepted a professorship for Classical Philology ( Graecistics ) at the University of Mainz , from where he was appointed to the Chair for Greek Language and Literature and Institute Director at the University of Basel in 1981 . 2002, two years before reaching the legal age, he was there emeritus .

For over 20 years, Latacz was one of the most important supporters of the archaeologist and Troja researcher Manfred Korfmann . Latacz repeatedly defended his controversial hypothesis, according to which the Homeric account of the Trojan War basically goes back to real historical events in the late Bronze Age , most recently in the dispute with Raoul Schrott .

Latacz is a specialist in early Greek literature and culture and is considered one of the most important Homer and epic experts in the German-speaking world. In addition to his teaching activities, he has appeared with numerous publications (over 250 essays) on Homer, early Greek literature and also on Attic tragedy . He is currently working on a complete commentary on the Iliad , the Basel Homer Commentary .

On July 11, 2014, Latacz received the Ausonius Prize 2014 in recognition of his complete academic work.
