Johann Joseph Graf von Trautson zu Falkenstein (born July 17, 1707 in Falkenstein , Lower Austria ; † March 10, 1757 in Vienna ) was a Roman Catholic clergyman who was appointed Archbishop- Coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Vienna and Titular Archbishop of Cartagine ( Carthage ) in 1750. was appointed Prince Archbishop of Vienna from 1751 to 1757 and cardinal from 1756 to 1757 .

origin

He came from the Tyrolean nobility , was a younger son of the Reich Count Johann Leopold Donat von Trautson , since 1711 Reich Prince Trautson Count zu Falkenstein Freiherr zu Sprechenstein u. Schroffenstein, hereditary court master in Austria under the Enns , imperial court master etc., knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece (* 1659, † 1724) and his wife, Theresia Ungnad, Countess of Weissenwolff Freiin zu Sonnegg u. Ennsegg († 1741). Decisive for his career was his uncle Ernst Trautson Reichsgraf zu Falkenstein , who was Prince Archbishop of Vienna from 1685 to 1702.

Life

After completing his theological training , he obtained a doctorate in scripture. He was ordained priest on September 26, 1728 in Salzburg . He was first canon in Salzburg, then canon in Passau and Breslau and provost von Ardagger .

On December 7, 1750 he was appointed coadjutor of the Archdiocese of Vienna and titular archbishop of Cartagine . The episcopal ordination received his Archbishop Sigismund of Kollonitz on 25 December of that year. After the death of Cardinal Kollonitz, he headed the diocese as Prince Archbishop from May 17, 1751.

Because in a pastoral letter of January 1, 1752, he denounced the abuses in sermons, the people's belief in miracles and excesses in indulgences , he was accused of being a secret Protestant . Writing is often seen as the beginning of a church enlightenment.

Maria Theresa appointed him protector of theological and philosophical sciences at the University of Vienna and head of the new university building. (now Old University and seat of the Austrian Academy of Sciences ).

Shortly before his death, he was appointed cardinal priest on April 5, 1756 , but could no longer accept a title . He was buried in the bishop 's vault of St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna .

In 1862 the Trautsongasse in Vienna- Josefstadt (8th district) was named after him.
