- Charles Chaplin starts working for the Keystone Studios on. Filming of his first film Making a Living , directed by Henry Lehrman , will begin in early January and will premiere on February 2nd. On 7 and 9 February, the films are Kid Auto Races at Venice ( Soapbox Race in Venice ), which has been completed in just 45 minutes on January 10, and Mabel's Strange Predicament ( Mabel in embarrassing situation ) published in which Chaplin first time can be seen in the role of the tramp. This was followed by several films with Mabel Normand , but Chaplin repeatedly had problems with the directors and the leading actress. His first directorial debut, Caught in the Rain , will be released on May 4th .
- February 8 : The short film Gertie the Dinosaur by Winsor McCay has its world premiere at the Palace Theater in Chicago. The title character is considered the first real cartoon character that the animation helps to its commercial and artistic breakthrough.
- American director Lois Weber is the first woman to direct a feature film. The Merchant of Venice has its premiere in February.
- October 26th : The film Dough and Dynamite by and with Charles Chaplin is released.
- November 14 : Mack Sennett's feature film Tillie's Punctured Romance ( Tillie's troubled romance ) with Marie Dressler , Charles Chaplin and Mabel Normand has its premiere. It is considered the first full-length comedy film in the United States.
- At the end of the year, Charlie Chaplin's engagement with Keystone Studios ends after 35 films because they refuse to accept his increased fee demands. In November, Chaplin signs a contract with Essanay, run by film pioneers George K. Spoor and Gilbert M. Anderson .
- In New York City , the Strand Theater, at that time the largest cinema in the world with 3300 seats, opens.
- The film studio Paramount Pictures is founded in Hollywood .
Austria
- MAY 22: The first propaganda - Documentary Austria is listed in theaters: Our navy . The manufacturer is the WAF - the “Wiener Autorfilms” production company , recently founded by Erich Pommer .
- September: The first war weekly review in Austria-Hungary appears with the war journal of Wiener Kunstfilm . A few weeks later, the direct competitor, Sascha-Film , follows with its own war newsreel ( Austrian cinema weekly report from the northern and southern theater of war , later for the sake of simplicity: Sascha war weekly report )
- Jupiter Film has the French Pierre Paul Gilmans direct the first Austrian monumental film in Tyrol : Speckbacher . Original Speckbacher sabers and 2000 extras, also carrying historical weapons, were used for the recordings, in which members of the Exl stage were also involved . Jupiter Film went bankrupt after completing the most complex film in Austrian film history to date.
