- The beginning of 1893 opened Thomas Alva Edison in West Orange , New Jersey , the Black Maria , the first production studio for kinetographische films. In May of this year he will be showing the public films made there, which his assistant, William Dickson , will submit to the Library of Congress in August to protect them from copyright. Among others, Blacksmith Scene , which is considered to be the first film produced for commercial screenings.
