John Kahn

John Kahn (born June 13, 1947 in Memphis , Tennessee , † May 30, 1996 in Mill Valley , California ) was an American bass player who played mostly folk , bluegrass and rock music .

Kahn played most of his life around the Grateful Dead and he became friends with its bandleaders Jerry Garcia . For over 25 years they played together in different bands. He played in the Jerry Garcia Band for 20 years , had a short-lived band of his own called "Reconstruction" and was involved in the sidebands Legion of Mary , Old and in the Way and Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and their albums. He took over the production of the Dead album Shakedown Street when the actual producer Lowell George ran out of time. The original production was interrupted by a tour of Egypt, during which the band also performed at the Pyramids of Giza . Kahn was also involved in this tour.

Kahn took his first steps into the music business with Mike Bloomfield on his album "It's Not Killing Me". He came to his collaboration with Al Kooper and the resulting album The Live Adventures of Mike Bloomfield and Al Kooper . Other musicians Kahn worked with include Paul Butterfield , Maria Muldaur , Nick Gravenites , John Lee Hooker , Peter Rowan , Tom Fogerty and David Grisman . In the course of his career he has worked on over 50 albums.

On May 30, 1996, Kahn died of heart disease caused by his long-term drug use.
