John R. Steelman

John Roy Steelman (born June 23, 1900 in Thornton , Arkansas , † July 14, 1999 in Naples , Florida ) was an American sociologist , economist , university professor and chief of staff of the White House .

biography

After attending school, he first studied at Henderson Brown College in Arkadelphia and obtained a Bachelor of Arts (BA) there in 1922 . A subsequent postgraduate course at Vanderbilt University in Nashville , he completed in 1924 with a Master of Arts (MA). In 1928 he finally earned a Philosophiae Doctor (Ph.D.) at the University of North Carolina and was then until 1934 Professor of Sociology and Economics at Alabama College .

In 1934 he switched to government service and was employed by the United States Department of Labor . There he was first commissioner ( Commissioner ) of the US Conciliation Service and then from 1936 to 1937 special assistant to Secretary of Labor Frances Perkins . Most recently he was director of the arbitration service until the end of World War II in 1945.

In 1945 he became a special assistant in the White House before US President Harry S. Truman appointed him the first White House Chief of Staff in 1946 . He held this office in Truman's expanded cabinet until the end of Truman's presidency on January 20, 1953.

He then worked for several years as a consultant in the private sector and as a publisher .
