John Witherspoon (actor)
John Witherspoon (born January 27, 1942 as John Weatherspoon in Detroit , † October 29, 2019 in Los Angeles ) was an American actor .
life and career
John Witherspoon began his show career as a model for various department store catalogs . He has combined his career as a stand-up comedian with mostly comedic roles in film and television. From the late 1970s he was involved in more than 80 film and television productions and also known under the names Johnny Witherspoon and Detroit John .
He became known for his roles in the movies Hollywood Shuffle (1987), Boomerang (1992) and Friday (1995) as well as the WB sitcom The Wayans Bros. from the 1990s. Witherspoon was nominated for a 2004 BET Comedy Award for his role in the comedy series The Tracy Morgan Show . He appeared in supporting roles in some of the Eddie Murphy comedies . He also voiced the character Robert Freeman in the original animated television series The Boondocks (2005 to 2014). From 2014 until his death he was regularly in front of the camera for the comedy series Black Jesus .
David Letterman is the godfather of his son John David. His older brother William Weatherspoon (1936-2005) was a musician and wrote the Motown hit What Becomes of the Brokenhearted for Jimmy Ruffin . He was Lamont Dozier's cousin .
