Jonathan Erdmann (born March 12, 1988 in Potsdam ) is a German volleyball and beach volleyball player . After some success in youth, he became vice-European champion in 2011 and took part in the 2012 Olympic Games. In 2013 he finished third at the World Cup. He was also twice German champion and three times runner-up.
Career beach volleyball
Erdmann started playing beach volleyball in 2004. His first partners, with whom he competed in youth tournaments, were Erik Weber and Marcus Benthien . With Stefan Windscheif he came in fourth at the U18 European Championship in 2004 in Mysłowice and a year later at the World Championship for the same age group. In 2006 Erdmann won the U20 European Championship in Ankaran with Windscheif and the U19 World Championship in Bermuda with Marvin Klass . He was also ninth with Tilo Backhaus at the U21 World Cup in Mysłowice. In 2007 Erdmann / Klass took part in an open tournament of the FIVB World Tour in Zagreb for the first time . They finished fifth at the U20 European Championship in Scheveningen . Erdmann achieved third place with Windscheif at the U21 World Cup in Modena . In 2008 he came fourth at the U23 European Championship in Espinho (with Windscheif) and ninth place at the U21 World Championship in Brighton (with Klass). In 2009 Erdmann / Windscheif achieved top ten results on the World Tour for the first time in ninth place in Shanghai and seventh in Rome .
Erdmann then formed a new duo with Kay Matysik . Erdmann / Matysik took part in the 2009 World Cup in Stavanger , but dropped out as third in the group after the preliminary round. In the same year they played their first Grand Slams and came fourth in the German championship . In 2010 they reached ninth place in Rome, Stavanger and Klagenfurt . At the 2011 World Cup in Stavanger , they lost their first round match against their German rivals Klemperer / Koreng , but still managed to win the group; in the round of 16 they were eliminated with a 1: 2 against the Latvians Pļaviņš / Šmēdiņš . On the World Tour they then managed a series of three ninth places and a fourth place in Stare Jabłonki . They were even more successful at the European Championships in Kristiansand . There they defeated three Dutch duos after a group stage without losing a set in the knockout phase, before losing to Julius Brink and Jonas Reckermann in the purely German final . The following year, however, they had to admit defeat to the Dutch Boersma / Spijkers in the second round of the European Championship in Scheveningen . On the World Tour 2012 they finished fifth six times. They also qualified for the London Olympics . After they had reached the round of 16 via the lucky loser round of the group third, they were eliminated against the later finalists Emanuel / Alison . A month later they became German champions in Timmendorfer Strand by beating Koreng / Walkenhorst in the final . In 2013 they finished fifth at the Grand Slam in Rome. At the World Championships in Stare Jabłonki they made it to the semi-finals without losing a set. After losing to Brouwer / Meeuwsen from the Netherlands , they secured the bronze medal with a win against Alison / Emanuel. At the European Championships in Klagenfurt , they reached fifth place. Because of a shoulder injury from Matysik, they could not defend their German championship title. In 2014 Erdmann / Matysik had numerous top ten placements at the FIVB Grand Slams and won the national Smart Super Cups in Binz and Kühlungsborn . At the European Championships in Cagliari , they finished ninth. In August he secured the German championship again on Timmendorfer Strand. In the final he defeated Sebastian Fuchs and Thomas Kaczmarek with his team partner Kay Matysik in the tiebreaker . Erdmann / Matysik finished ninth at the 2015 World Cup in the Netherlands . After failing to qualify for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro , Kay Matysik and Jonathan Erdmann split. Since then Erdmann has played with changing partners. In the Klagenfurt Major he finished ninth with Stefan Windscheif and in the Grand Slam in Long Beach he came in 17th with Bennet Poniewaz . At the German championship he reached the final with Thomas Kaczmarek, which was lost to Böckermann / Flüggen .
In 2017 Erdmann played together with Armin Dollinger and in 2018/19 with Max Betzien . Erdmann / Betzien finished fifth at the 3-star World Tour tournament in Tokyo and at the 2018 German Championship . In June 2019 they won the Techniker Beach Tour in Nuremberg . Earlier, Erdmann had won the tournament in Düsseldorf alongside Jonas Schröder . He started with a wildcard at the World Championships in Hamburg together with Sven Winter , who was Erdmann's partner for the rest of the season. Erdmann / Winter took part in some tournaments on the FIVB World Tour and in almost all other tournaments on the Techniker Beach Tour, where they came second in Kühlungsborn. At the end of the season they were German runner-up in Timmendorfer Strand .
Career indoor volleyball
Erdmann started playing indoor volleyball in 1998 at his hometown club WSG Potsdam Waldstadt. He then played in the youth team VC Olympia Berlin before he was committed in 2006 by Bundesliga promoted Netzhoppers Königs Wusterhausen . In the 2008/09 season he reached fourth place in the Bundesliga with the team. 2010/11 he was still active for one season at the second division club SV Lindow-Gransee . In the 2019/20 season he played again for Netzhoppers in the Bundesliga.
