Live and act

After elementary school, grammar school and studying law (Dr. iur.) At the University of Graz, Josef Krainer was Secretary General of the Catholic Action in Styria from 1956 to 1962 . He also studied for a year at the Bologna Center of the American Johns Hopkins University in Italy. He joined the Styrian Farmers' Union , a sub-organization of the ÖVP, and became its director in 1969. In 1970 he became a member of the National Council , two years later Krainer was elected regional party chairman (party chairman). Between 1971 and 1980 he held the office of a regional council (including for agriculture and forestry).

In 1980 he succeeded Friedrich Niederl as governor of Styria. In the Styrian state election in 1981 , he prevailed against the social democratic candidate. Krainer won an absolute majority in state elections in 1981 and 1986. He was Governor of Styria until 1996. He was considered an advocate of an independent course of his country and his party towards federal politics. Among other things, he promoted the expansion of the high-level transport network in Styria, advocated environmental protection projects such as the desulphurisation of power plants and advocated a cosmopolitan Styria - for example through the creation of the Afro-Asian Institute. He also sponsored the Styrian Autumn . The crisis of the nationalized industry in the Mur-Mürz-Furche also fell during his term of office . In 1996 he resigned after the ÖVP was barely able to hold first place and had lost eight percentage points, and Waltraud Klasnic was his successor.

He was an honorary member of the Catholic student union AV Austria Innsbruck .

Josef Krainer died on December 30, 2016 and was buried at the cemetery in the St. Veit district of Graz .
