Joseph Edward Brennan (born November 2, 1934 in Portland , Maine ) is an American politician . He was governor of the state of Maine from 1979 to 1987 .

Early years and political advancement

After elementary school, Brennan served in the US Army between 1953 and 1955. He then attended Boston College until 1958 and then studied law at the University of Maine . There he graduated in 1963.

Brennan was an MP in the Maine House of Representatives from 1965 to 1971 . Since 1970, he has also served as a district attorney in Cumberland County . From 1973 to 1975 he was a member of the Maine Senate . In 1974, he unsuccessfully applied for his Democratic Party's nomination for governor. Instead, he was Attorney General of Maine between 1975 and 1977 . In 1978 he reapplied for the office of governor. This time he was nominated by his party and elected by a large majority by the citizens of Maine.

Governor and Congressman

Joseph Brennan took up his new office on January 3, 1979. After re-election in 1982, he was able to exercise it until January 7, 1987. Brennan was a member of several governors' associations during this period. His tenure as governor was uneventful.

Between 1987 and 1991 he represented his state in the US House of Representatives in Washington . In 1990 and 1994 he ran unsuccessfully for a return to the office of governor of Maine and in 1996 his attempt to be elected to the US Senate failed . Since 1999, Joseph Brennan has been a member of the Federal Maritime Commission , an agency that deals with overseas trade. Brennan is married to Constance Brennan, with whom he has two children.
