Daniel Franklin Davis (born September 12, 1843 in Freedom , Waldo County , Maine , † January 9, 1897 in Bangor , Maine) was an American politician and governor of Maine from 1880 to 1881 .

Early years

After graduating from various schools, Davis studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1869. He then began his new job in East Corinth, Maine. During the American Civil War he was a soldier in a cavalry regiment from Maine.

Political career

Between 1871 and 1875 the Republican Davis was a member of the state parliament of Maine and then from 1875 to 1879 in the state senate. In 1879, he was elected the new governor of Maine by the Legislature after none of the candidates obtained an absolute majority in the regular election. Davis began his one-year term on January 17, 1880. During this time, the prohibition law was hotly debated in Maine. In 1880 Davis ran unsuccessfully for re-election. Between 1882 and 1886 he was the head of customs in the port of Bangor .

End of life and family

Daniel Davis died in Bangor on January 9, 1897. He was married to Laura Godwin, with whom he had eight children. He was buried in the Corinthian Cemetery in Corinth.
