Julia Jäkel (born November 13, 1971 in Mainz ; real name Julia Jäkel-Wickert ) is a German manager . She was appointed to the executive board of the publishing house Gruner + Jahr in 2012 , was its chairman from 2013 and has been the chief executive officer since 2015 . Under her leadership, the publishing house was radically rebuilt, especially through the expansion of digital offerings. Jäkel is a member of Bertelsmann's Group Management Committee and chair of the Bertelsmann Content Alliance .

Jäkel was born in Mainz in 1971 . Her parents and grandparents worked as doctors. After graduating from the Gutenberg School in Wiesbaden , Jäkel studied history , political science and economics at the Ruprecht-Karls-Universität Heidelberg and Harvard University . In 1996 she completed her studies with a Master of Philosophy in International Relations from the University of Cambridge .

Jäkel has been married to the journalist Ulrich Wickert since 2003 . The relationship resulted in two children (* 2012).

Career

In 1997 Jäkel went through the Bertelsmann Entrepreneurs Program and then switched to Gruner + Jahr. After a brief stint as managing editor of the Gala , she was part of the founding team of the Financial Times Deutschland in 1999 . At first Jäkel acted as deputy managing editor and spokeswoman for the business newspaper. In 2001 she became the publishing director for editions of the Financial Times Deutschland. After five years with the Financial Times Deutschland, Jäkel moved back to Baumall in 2004 and rose to become the Brigitte Group's publishing director .

In 2008, Jäkel initially took over the management of the “G + J Exclusive” group, which Gruner + Jahr merged with the “G + J Living” group in the same year. She was responsible for Chefkoch.de , Food & Drink , National Geographic Germany , Schöner Wohnen and various other magazines and digital offers. In addition, Jäkel took over the position of managing director of the Corporate Media division at Gruner + Jahr, which was expanded under her leadership. In the course of a reorganization of Gruner + Jahr in 2012, the number of media brands in Jäkel's area of ​​responsibility rose to over 20 and from then on also included Brigitte , Gala , Grazia and 11 friends .

In 2012 Julia Jäkel was appointed to the board of Gruner + Jahr. Jäkel was responsible for the German market and ran the business on an equal footing with Torsten-Jörn Klein and Achim Twardy. One of Jäkel's first decisions as a board member was to discontinue the deficit Financial Times Deutschland . Half a year after taking office, she finally took over the chairmanship of the board of Gruner + Jahr. In the following years Jäkel promoted the journalistic work, pushed the online offer of Gruner + Jahr and improved the relations with the parent company Bertelsmann. With the change in the legal form of Gruner + Jahr at the beginning of 2015, the management board was transferred to a management team . Jäkel acts in the position of Chief Executive Officer , Oliver Radtke and Stephan Schäfer are also part of the management.

In 2016 Julia Jäkel was named "Media Manager of the Year" by Kress . Horizont awarded her the “Media Woman of the Year 2017” award. At the German Media Prize 2018 she was honored as "Media Personality of the Year".
