Karl Bierwirth

Karl Bierwirth (born September 24, 1907 in Essen , † May 3, 1955 in Bonn ) was a German weightlifter .

Career

The son of a cream wholesaler began lifting weights at the boxing club Siegfried 26 Essen in 1926. After only two years he was able to represent Germany at the Olympic Games in Amsterdam , where he finished 9th with 315 kg in the Olympic three-way fight. Until the end of the 1930s he was one of the top German and European weightlifters. He was a specialist in one-armed pushing left and in 1930 he achieved a world record of 100 kg in this discipline, which was only improved 18 years later by the Russian Ivan Maltsev. With Siegfried Essen and the VKSA Essen 88, to which he had switched, he won the German team championship six times. In 1932 he qualified for the Olympic Games in Los Angeles with achievements that were expected to win a medal . Due to financial bottlenecks in the association, he could not take part in the games.

Karl Bierwirth was nicknamed "Cavalier at the dumbbell" because of his exemplary athletic posture and his elegance when lifting weights. The self-employed businessman who owned a large dairy farm died of a brain tumor at the age of 48 . He was buried in the southwest cemetery in Essen .
