Location of Kennedy

Kennedy is the 8th district ( localidad ) of the capital of Colombia and is located southwest of central Bogotá . The Kennedy borough has an area of 3,855 hectares and a population of more than 1.5 million.

Origin of the name

Techo founded. Source: Colombia's Broadcasting

Ciudad Techo ( roof town ) was the original name of the current district, which belonged to the Kaziken Techitina with its indigenous population. Later the place was given to the Spanish agent Juan Ruiz Orejuela and in 1608 to the Jesuits .

The municipality was then after the 35th President of the United States of America , John F. Kennedy , named in 1961 under the program Alliance for Progress ( Alliance for Progress visited) Colombia. In order to bring the Latin American members of the Organization of American States closer to the USA, Kennedy supported the alliance's urban development project. In gratitude, the Ciudad Techo district (a modern city within the city) was renamed Ciudad Kennedy in 1963 . After the assassination of Kennedy, this place was named after him.
