Kim Källström [ ˘cɛlstrøm ] (born August 24, 1982 in Sandviken ) is a former Swedish football player who was most recently under contract with the Swedish club Djurgårdens IF . He was a midfielder who could play in the central attacking midfield and on the left flank.

Career

Adolescent years

Källström started playing football at Sandvikens IF in 1989 . A year later he moved to the youth department of Partille IF , for which he played until 1996. At the same time, he also played ice hockey in his youth .

After those responsible at BK Häcken discovered Källström's talent, he went to the youth of the then second division team in the spring of 1997 , where his father Mikael , once a midfielder at Gefle IF and Sandvikens IF , was part of the coaching staff. At times the father was his personal trainer.

Professional and national team debut

In 1999 Källström made his debut as a 16-year-old for BK Häcken in the second-rate Division 1 Södra . Coach Kjell Pettersson used him directly as a regular player and at the end of the season he was the season winner with the club before local rivals GAIS , so that the team rose to the Allsvenskan . There Källström was awarded at the end of the 2000 season as Årets nykomling ( Swedish : "Young Player of the Year").

The national coaches Tommy Söderberg and Lars Lagerbäck nominated Källström for the internationals of the Swedish national team against the Faroese selection on January 31st and the Finnish national team on February 1st 2001. After the day before in the 0-0 draw against the Faroe Islands players like Zlatan Ibrahimović or Erik Edman made their debut, Källström made his first appearance in the national team in the 1-0 defeat against the Finnish side alongside debutants like Sharbel Touma and Petter Hansson . Later in the year, Källström's second year in the top class, he scored eight goals this season. Nevertheless, the Gothenburg club rose as penultimate in the second division. He then left the club and moved within the Allsvenskan to Djurgårdens IF , because in Källström's opinion "the most beautiful football was played" there.

First title wins

The coaching duo Zoran Lukić and Sören Åkeby had led Djurgårdens IF in 2000 from the second division back to the Allsvenskan, in which the promoted team was runner- up behind Hammarby IF . Källström won the double of the championship and national cup in 2002 with the young team, for which other young players such as Andreas Isaksson , Jones Kusi-Asare and Louay Chanko played . With twelve goals this season, Källström contributed to this and was also able to establish himself within the national team. He drew attention to himself outside of Sweden and clubs like AC Parma , AS Roma and Hertha BSC showed interest in a commitment. Nevertheless, he stayed with the club and contributed to the successful title defense in the championship the following year with 14 goals this season. As the second best scorer in the Allsvenskan list, he left Sweden at the end of the 2003 season .

Stade Rennes - first stop in Ligue 1

Although interest from the European top clubs AC Milan , Manchester United , Ajax Amsterdam , PSV Eindhoven , Lazio Rome and Aston Villa was rumored, he chose Stade Rennes in the French Ligue 1 as his first foreign station. Here he immediately won a regular place in the attacking midfield and scored his first goal for his new club in a competitive game in his second outing, a 4-0 win over FC Sochaux with the final score in the 84th minute. In the second half of the 2003/04 season he scored seven goals in 18 games and was the club's second-best goalscorer behind the Swiss striker Alexander Frei (19 goals). His hard shot in particular led to goalscoring and was praised in the press.

In the summer of 2004, Källström was considered by Söderberg and Lagerbäck for the first time in a major tournament. First he was used as a supplementary player at the European Championship in 2004 , before he was in the starting line-up for the first time in the 2-2 draw against Denmark in the last group game. In the quarter-final game against the Dutch national team , he was substituted on again, in the penalty shoot-out he took on Edwin van der Sar on the first penalty and converted. Sweden were eliminated after Olof Mellberg and Ibrahimović missed a shot with a Phillip Cocu penalty kicked against the post .

In his second season at Stade Rennais, Källström maintained his position in the regular team under coach László Bölöni . Alongside Jacques Faty , Olivier Monterrubio , Abdeslam Ouaddou and Olivier Sorlin and his Swedish compatriot Isaksson, he finished fourth with the team and qualified for the 2005/06 UEFA Cup . There he was used in four games, but as the bottom of the group G , the team was eliminated without winning a point and. a. behind Rapid Bucharest and VfB Stuttgart with only one goal out of the competition.

In Ligue 1, Källström was one of the pillars of the team and played most of the league games. Although he scored eight goals this season, as seventh in the table, the club narrowly missed qualification for the European competitions. Lagerbäck, who is now solely responsible for the Swedish national team, has been nominated for its second tournament, the 2006 World Cup in Germany . In the first group game, a 0-0 win against Trinidad and Tobago , he was on the bench before being substituted on for Tobias Linderoth in the 79th minute . In the following group games, a 2-0 win over Paraguay and a 2-2 draw against England , he was in the starting line-up. 2 defeat to: Even with the 0 hosts Germany he ran on at the beginning, but was after the yellow-red card for Teddy Lucic after 39 minutes, replaced by the defensive man Hansson.

Title wins with Olympique Lyon

After the World Cup, Källström moved within Ligue 1 to reigning champions Olympique Lyon . The transfer fee was about seven million euros. Here he had some teething problems and came in his first season on 33 appearances in the league, including 13 as a substitute. He also made six appearances in the 2006/07 Champions League . At the end of the season he was French champion and after a 2-1 win over cup winner FC Sochaux winner of the Trophée des Champions . Even in his second season in Lyon, he was unable to play permanently in the first team. In contrast to his style of play at the previous clubs, he was less a goal scorer than a preparer at his new employer.

In the summer of 2008 he was nominated by Lagerbäck for his third tournament in a row, but at the European Championship 2008 he was only one of the supplementary players and came to two short appearances against Spain and Russia . As third in the group, the national team started their journey home after the preliminary round.

After his return to Olympique after the tournament, Källström was only part of the regular players and mainly played as a substitute in the Champions League. Over the course of the season he worked alongside Michel Bastos , Jérémy Toulalan and Ederson over long periods of time a regular place in the left midfield. In 32 appearances, he scored two goals, with the series champions of previous years, however, it was only enough for third place in the table behind champions Girondins Bordeaux and Olympique Marseille . In the placement path of the play-offs for the 2009/10 UEFA Champions League , he played both games when the team prevailed with two clear victories against the Belgian representative RSC Anderlecht . He was then in the European Cup, in which he scored a goal in the group stage in the 4-0 away win against the Hungarian champions VSC Debrecen , and the league regular, while in autumn 2009 he played with the Swedish national team in qualifying for the 2010 World Cup behind Denmark and Portugal failed as third party. With the club he reached the semi-finals of the Champions League, in which the team was eliminated by Bayern Munich , but qualified as runner-up again for the European premier class. As a regular at the side of Yoann Gourcuff , Lisandro López , Michel Bastos and Jérémy Toulalan, he also missed a title win as third in the table in the 2010/11 season .

Spartak Moscow

From 2012 to 2015 Källström was under contract with Spartak Moscow in the Russian Premier League .

On January 31, 2014 Källström moved to the end of the 2013/14 season on loan in the Premier League for Arsenal .

Change to the Grasshopper Club Zurich

From summer 2015 Källström was under contract with Grasshopper Club Zurich in the Swiss Super League and was captain there. In the 2015/16 season he finished fourth with the club and is therefore eligible for qualifying for the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League . In the Swiss Cup 2015/16, however , the Grasshopper failed in the second round at the third division FC Köniz .

Return to the Homeland

On January 31, 2017, the Grasshoppers announced that Källström would leave the club until 2018 despite an ongoing contract. He wanted to return to his homeland for private reasons. On February 10, 2017, the move to his former club Djurgårdens IF was finally confirmed.

At the European Football Championship in France in 2016 , he was included in Sweden's squad. He was one of the regulars and was on the pitch for the full 90 minutes in all games. For the team, the tournament ended bottom of the table after the group stage. After the last game, Källström and Zlatan Ibrahimović , who had announced this a few days beforehand, and goalkeeper Andreas Isaksson , who had announced this in March, ended their national team careers. With 131 internationals, Källström has played the fourth most games for the Swedes. On December 15, 2017, he ended his active club career after a season for Djurgårdens.
