The Nováky power plant is a coal-fired power plant in Slovakia .
location
It is located near Nováky and Zemianske Kostoľany ( Trenčiansky kraj ) and uses brown coal mined by the mining company Hornonitrianske Bane Prievidza (HBP) in the vicinity of Prievidza .
history
Construction began in 1949 and the first TG1 turbo generator went into operation four years later. Another unit was connected to the grid in 1957 with 178.8 MW el through ten boiler units and eight turbo generators. Four more blocks were added from 1963 to 1976. This increased the output of the power plant to 618.8 MW el . In 1987 a heat supply line was opened for the city of Prievidza. In 1998 the power plant was modernized and a flue gas desulphurisation system was installed. After obsolete parts of the main plant had been removed, a fluidized bed boiler and a counter-pressure turbo generator were installed there. The total output of the power plant is now 518 MW el . The output is divided into four blocks of 110 MW el each and three smaller blocks with 32, 28 and 18 MW el output.
The chimney of the power station is 300 meters high, the tallest freestanding structure in Slovakia.
