The Annaberg district was a district in the Karl-Marx-Stadt district of the GDR . From 1990 it existed as the district of Annaberg in the Free State of Saxony . His area is now in the Erzgebirge in Saxony. The seat of the district administration was in Annaberg-Buchholz .

The Annaberg district was in the Ore Mountains on the border with Czechoslovakia .
Neighboring areas
The Annaberg district bordered clockwise in the west, beginning with the Schwarzenberg , Aue , Stollberg , Zschopau and Marienberg districts . In the south it bordered on Czechoslovakia .
history
As early as 1874, the district administration Annaberg was established in the Kingdom of Saxony , which was renamed in 1939 in the district of Annaberg . The district of Annaberg belonged to the state of Saxony after 1945 and thus to the GDR since 1949.
On July 25, 1952, there was a comprehensive district reform in the GDR , in which, among other things, the states were dissolved and replaced by districts . The new Zschopau district was formed from part of the Annaberg district , while the new Annaberg district was created from the remaining part of the district. This was assigned to the newly formed Karl-Marx-Stadt district . The district seat was in the city of Annaberg-Buchholz .
The following 30 (remaining) communities formed the new district of Annaberg on July 25, 1952: Annaberg-Buchholz, Stadt, Arnsfeld, Bärenstein, Cranzahl, Crottendorf, Cunersdorf, Dörfel, Elterlein, Stadt, Frohnau, Geyer, Stadt, Geyersdorf, Grumbach, Hammerunterwiesenthal , Hermannsdorf, Jöhstadt, Stadt, Königswalde, Mildenau, Neudorf, Oberscheibe, Oberwiesenthal, Scheibenberg, Schlettau, Schmalzgrube, Schönfeld, Schwarzbach, Sehma, Steinbach, Tannenberg, Walthersdorf and Wiesa.
Up until the disbandment of the district in 2008, the following municipal area changes and reclassifications had taken place across the district boundaries:
- Dec. 04, 1952 - Neundorf is reclassified from the Zschopau district to the Annaberg district
- Jan. 01, 1956 - The Wiesenbad thermal baths are outsourced from Wiesa
- January 1, 1994 - Oberscheibe is incorporated into the city of Scheibenberg
- March 1, 1994 - Schmalzgrube is incorporated into the city of Jöhstadt
- January 1, 1996 - Frohnau is incorporated into the city of Annaberg-Buchholz
- April 1, 1996 - Schwarzbach to the city of Elterlein
- October 1, 1996 - Dörfel is incorporated into the town of Schlettau
- January 1, 1997 - Hammerunterwiesenthal is incorporated into the town of Oberwiesenthal, a health resort
- January 1, 1998 - Cunersdorf is incorporated into the city of Annaberg-Buchholz
- January 1, 1999 - Geyersdorf is incorporated into the city of Annaberg-Buchholz
- January 1, 1999 - Arnsfeld is incorporated into Mildenau
- January 1, 1999 - Hermannsdorf is incorporated into the town of Elterlein
- January 1, 1999 - Neudorf, Cranzahl and Sehma merge to form Gde. Sehmatal
- January 1, 1999 - Integration of Walthersdorf into Crottendorf
- January 1, 1999 - Steinbach is incorporated into the city of Jöhstadt
- January 1, 1999 - Neundorf, Schönfeld and Wiesa are incorporated into the Wiesenbad thermal baths
On May 17, 1990, the district of Annaberg became the district. On the occasion of the reunification of the two German states, the district was awarded to the re-established state of Saxony in October 1990 . During the second Saxon district reform , it was absorbed into the new Erzgebirge district on August 1, 2008.

The district area was opened up by the railway lines Flöha – Annaberg-Buchholz – Bärenstein , Annaberg-Buchholz – Schwarzenberg , Annaberg-Buchholz – Königswalde , Walthersdorf – Crottendorf and Cranzahl – Oberwiesenthal .

License Plate
Motor vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles) and trailers were assigned three-letter distinctive signs starting with the letter pairs TA and XA from around 1974 to the end of 1990 . The last number plate series used for motorcycles was XZ 52-01 to XZ 99-99 .
At the beginning of 1991 the district received the distinctive ANA .
