Laura Lane Welch Bush (born November 4, 1946 in Midland , Texas as Laura Lane Welch ) is the wife of former US President George W. Bush and was the First Lady of the United States from 2001 to 2009 .

Life

In her childhood, Laura Bush showed an early interest in literature. On November 6, 1963, while driving at night, Bush caused a car accident by missing a stop sign on an unlit country road, in which the driver of the other car, her close friend Mike Douglas, was killed. There were no legal consequences for her from this tragic incident. This year it was the second fatal accident at this intersection, so the city built a larger stop sign and later a traffic light system. She graduated from Southern Methodist University with a BA in Education in 1968 and soon began working as a primary school teacher. After receiving a Masters in Library Science from the University of Texas at Austin , she worked as a librarian. In 1977 she met George Walker Bush. They married that same year; Laura Bush had twins Barbara and Jenna in 1981 .

Her political career began as a result of her marriage. She took part in her husband's election campaign for a seat in the US Congress in 1978 and later in the successful election campaign for governor in Texas. As the First Lady of Texas, Laura Bush was in charge of a number of projects focused on health, education and the fight against illiteracy . In 1999/2000 she supported her husband in his campaign for the US presidency. Among other things, she gave the keynote address at the Republican National Convention , which earned her nationwide attention. George W. Bush won the 2000 presidential election against Al Gore , making her the First Lady of the United States.

In the novel American Wife , published in 2008 , the writer Curtis Sittenfeld draws a fictional portrait of Laura Bush.

social commitment

During her time as First Lady , she continued to be involved in projects that promoted education and combated illiteracy. For example, she initiated the annual National Book Festival . She also supported initiatives that deal with women's issues. These include breast cancer aid projects such as Susan G. Komen for the Cure or stroke prevention such as The Heart Truth . Bush also represented the United States on trips abroad. In doing so, she mostly devoted herself to the prevention and control of HIV / AIDS and malaria . According to a Gallup poll , Laura Bush was one of the most popular first ladies.
