Priscilla Tyler

Elizabeth Priscilla Cooper Tyler (born June 14, 1816 in New York City , † December 29, 1889 in Montgomery ) was the daughter-in-law of the tenth US President John Tyler . After his wife Letitia died before the end of Tyler's presidency, Priscilla was the US First Lady from September 10, 1842 to June 26, 1844.

Life

Priscilla's father, Thomas Apthorpe Cooper, was a successful producer, and her mother, Mary Fairlee Cooper, was a New York jet setter. When she was seventeen, Priscilla began working as an actress. The family lived in a large house on Broadway . The Coopers lost their property in the economic crisis of 1837 .

While playing Desdemona in a production of Othello in Richmond , she met Robert Tyler, John Tyler's eldest son. Despite social differences, the two married on September 12, 1839 in Bristol, Pennsylvania.

In 1844, Robert Tyler moved to Pennsylvania and Priscilla had to leave the White House.

The Tylers stayed in Pennsylvania for 16 years. After Robert died in 1877, his wife spent the last years of her life in Montgomery, Alabama.
