Lee Jang-ho (other romanizations: Lee Chang-ho or Yi Chang-ho ; born May 15, 1945 in Seoul ) is a South Korean film director . He is one of the most important and influential directors of South Korean film of the 1970s and 1980s. He is best known for Heavenly Homecoming to Stars , A Fine, Windy Day , The Fools Manifesto , Lee Jang-ho's baseball team, and The Man with the Three Coffins .

Life

Lee Jang-ho studied architecture at Hongik University but dreamed of a life in the film industry. First he wanted to be an actor and auditioned Shin Film at Shin Sang-ok's studio. However, he could not convince, but instead got a job as assistant director for Shin Sang-ok, which he carried out for eight years. Lee gained notoriety through his debut film Heavenly Homecoming To Stars ( Home of the Stars ) in the year 1974. It reached over 465,000 moviegoers. In 1975 he founded the Yeongsang Sidae movement ( 영상 시대 / 映像 時代 'Film Generation') together with the film journalist Byun In-shik and the directors Kim Ho-son , Ha Kil-jong , Hongpa and Lee Won-se . The group established a new film style and made artistic and culturally rich films.

His works focus on contemporary South Korean society, with a focus on the gap between rich and poor. In 1986 he founded his own film studio, Pan Films. At the Berlinale in 1988 he received the Caligari Film Prize for The Man with the Three Coffins . In the 1990s he worked as a film professor and head of the Seoul Film Commission.

His younger brother, Lee Yeong-ho , worked as an actor in film and theater.
