The 14th European Athletics Championships took place from August 26th to 31st, 1986 in Stuttgart . All competitions with the exception of the marathons and the walking competitions were held in the Neckar Stadium.

Competitions

The competition offer in the women's area has been expanded to include two disciplines. In addition, there was the 10,000-meter run and , for the first time, 10 km walking , a discipline from walking that was previously reserved for men.

Athletic performance

In the nation ranking it was close between the Soviet Union and the GDR . In the end, both teams each had eleven European Championship titleholders. Regarding the silver and bronze medals, however, the USSR - thirteen times silver / twelve times bronze - was ahead of the GDR - ten times silver / eight times bronze. The undisputed third place in this ranking went to Great Britain with eight European champions in their ranks. Bulgaria had three gold medals, Italy and Germany had two gold medals each.

The performance level of the individual athletes was extremely high.

• Five world records have been set, one of which is unofficial:
  • Hammer throw : Jurij Sedych , Soviet Union - 86.74 m
  • Javelin throw : Klaus Tafelmeier , BR Germany - 84.76 m, in the final (due to the new javelin that has just been introduced, this is still unofficial)
  • 400-meter hurdles : Marina Stepanowa , Soviet Union - 53.32 s
  • Javelin Throw: Fatima Whitbread , Great Britain - 77.44 m (in qualifying)
  • 200-meter run : Heike Drechsler , GDR - 21.71 s (equalized world record)

There were also two new European records:

• • 110-meter hurdles : Stéphane Caristan , France - 13.28 seconds (in the semifinals)
  • 110-meter hurdles: Stéphane Caristan, France - 13.20 seconds (in the final)
• Four athletes won two gold medals each at these championships
  • Heike Drechsler (GDR) - 200 meters, long jump
  • Roger Black (Great Britain) - 400 meters , 4 × 400 m relay
  • Marlies Göhr , GDR - 100 meters , 4 × 100 m relay
  • Marita Koch , GDR - 400 meters, 4 × 400 m relay
• Six of the European champion from 1986 had previously EM won -Titel:
  • Marita Koch, GDR - 400 meters, third success in a row since 1978, also third victory in a row with the 4 × 400 m relay of the GDR, so she was now six times European champion
  • Harald Schmid , BR Germany - 400 meter hurdles , third success in a row since 1978
  • Jurij Sedych, Soviet Union - hammer throw, third success in a row since 1978
