Romas Ubartas (born May 26, 1960 in Mikytai near Pagėgiai ) is a former Lithuanian athlete who competed for the Soviet Union until 1990. He was the 1992 Olympic champion in the discus throw .

Romas Ubartas celebrated his first big victory at the 1986 European Championships in Stuttgart when he won the discus throw with 67.08 m. He was six centimeters ahead of Georgi Kolnootschenko . The Lithuanian Vaclavas Kidykas in third completed the triple success of the Soviet Union.

At the 1987 World Championships in Rome won Jürgen Schult from the GDR. Ubartas took sixth place with 65.50 m.

In May 1988 Ubartas threw his personal best with 70.06 m. At the end of September, Ubartas competed at the Olympic Games in Seoul . Jürgen Schult won with 68.82 m. Ubartas was in second place until the fifth round when the German Rolf Danneberg surpassed him with 67.38 m. Ubartas was able to counter with his last attempt. He won the silver medal with 67.48 m.

Lithuania declared independence in 1990, but this was not recognized until a year later. And so Ubartas also competed for the Soviet Union at the European Championships in Split in 1990 . He was fifth with 63.70 m.

In 1992 Lithuania competed for the first time since the 1930s with its own team at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . The only gold medal in Barcelona was won by Romas Ubartas. With 65.12 m he was able to surpass Jürgen Schult by 18 centimeters.

At the 1993 World Championships in Stuttgart , Ubartas finished fourth with 65.24 m. This placement was later revoked because of a doping offense. He had tested positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone and was banned for four years.

After his doping ban , Ubertas started at the 2000 Olympic Games, but did not reach the final. With a height of 2.02 m, his competition weight was 123 kg.
