Lemuel J. Alston

Lemuel James Alston (* 1760 in Warren County , Province of North Carolina , † 1836 in Clarke County , Alabama ) was an American politician . Between 1807 and 1811 he represented the state of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Both the exact date of birth and death of Lemuel Alston are unknown. He was born in 1760 in the eastern part of what was then Granville County (now Warren County), North Carolina. After the Revolutionary War he moved to Greenville, South Carolina. After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in this profession in his new hometown.

Alston was a member of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1789 and 1790 . In the congressional election of 1806 he was elected as a candidate for the Democratic Republican Party in the eighth constituency of South Carolina in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Elias Earle on March 4, 1807 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1811 .

In 1816 he moved to Clarke County, Alabama, where he settled near Grove Hill . Between 1816 and 1821 he was the presiding judge of the local district court. Lemuel Alston died in 1836 on his estate "Alston Place".
