In 2016 Goeßling was accepted into the national team for the women's Olympic soccer tournament in Brazil. She was used in all six tournament games of the German team (five of them substitutions) and won the gold medal by beating Sweden 2-1 in the final .

In November 2017, Goeßling was initially sorted out by the then national coach Steffi Jones as a 97-time national player and not nominated for the game against France on November 24, 2017 in Bielefeld, for which Jones was criticized. Goeßling was “disappointed and sad” in the NDR interview that he was not at an important “home game” (Goeßling was born in Bielefeld) and criticized Jones: “[I] I find it disrespectful to me, sometimes like that to teach that I don't know all the reasons that are running in the background. I don't think you deserve it after 97 internationals ”. Goessling thereupon expressed thoughts of resignation.

After a clarifying conversation with Jones, Goeßling was appointed to the squad of the German women's national football team for the SheBelieves Cup 2018 . There she made her 100th international match in the 3-0 defeat against France in Orlando on March 7, 2018, when she was substituted on in the last minute of the game and did not make any contact with the ball. Jones was also heavily criticized for this, including by Bernd Schröder ; shortly afterwards, after the German team had only finished last in the SheBelieves Cup, Jones was released on March 13, 2018 and replaced by Horst Hrubesch .

For the 2019 World Cup , Goeßling was appointed to the German team by national coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg . It was only used in one game ( 1-0 against Spain on June 12, 2019) in the preliminary round. This was also their last game for the national team. After being eliminated in the quarter-finals against Sweden, she announced her resignation from the national team due to the lack of consideration. She had already indicated in advance that she would withdraw from the national team after the World Cup and also end her professional career with the end of her current contract in Wolfsburg in summer 2021.
