The Algarve Cup in 2014 was the 21 playout of annually since 1994 discharged and after the Olympic tournament women , the World Cup and European Championship main women's football tournament for national teams and was held from 5 to 12 March 2014 as previously at various venues of the Algarve , the southernmost region of Portugal . Six teams from the top 10 of the FIFA world rankings took part in the tournament. The tournament also served as preparation for possible referees and assistants for the U-20 World Cup 2014 and 2015 World Cup . The tournament should also test electronic performance control systems, which are carried by the players in the form of electronic chips or other small devices.

The venues were the Estádio Algarve in Faro and other locations in the Algarve.

mode

Twelve national teams took part in the tournament. The eight teams with the highest ratings formed groups A and B, the four weaker teams formed group C. First, the teams in their group played each against each other for the placement. First the best score, then the direct comparison and only then the goal difference is decisive for the placement. Then proceed as follows:

  • Game for 11th place: The third and fourth placed teams in Group C.
  • Game for 9th place: The second-placed team in group C against the worse fourth-placed team in groups A or B.
  • Game for 7th place: Winner of group C against the better fourth-placed team in groups A or B.
  • Match for 5th place: The third-placed teams in groups A and B.
  • Match for 3rd place: The teams placed second in groups A and B.
  • Final game: The winners of groups A and B play for the tournament victory.

If it was a draw after the regular playing time of the placement games, there was no extra time , but a penalty shoot-out immediately afterwards .

Since FIFA classifies the games as friendlies, each team was allowed to make six substitutions per game.

particularities

  • Seventh place is the US's worst ranking so far.
  • Norway could not win a game for the first time.
  • During the tournament, Annike Krahn , Þóra Björg Helgadóttir and Dóra María Lárusdóttir made their 100th and Heather O'Reilly their 200th international match.
  • As in previous years, the Cyprus Cup , won by France , took place at the same time as the Algarve Cup . In addition, there was another tournament in Istria , but this time with only three teams (Croatia, Poland and Hungary).
  • The group game between Germany and Norway was chaired by the Romanian referee Cristina Dorcioman , who also directed the last European Championship final between the two teams and gave two penalties for Norway. In the second minute of the group game she gave Norway another penalty, which ended the longest run of the German team without conceding a goal (10 games).

TV appointments

In Germany , Eurosport broadcast some games live with its two channels, including all group games for the DFB women and the USA as well as two games with world champions Japan . The finale on March 12th was only shown with a time delay and commercial breaks due to the fact that Japanese television had the first exploitation rights.
