The Austrian national soccer team for women has existed since 1990 and is the national team for women of the Austrian Soccer Association (ÖFB).

history

In qualifying for the 2011 World Cup , the team met Spain , England , Turkey and Malta . Austria took 3rd place.

For the first time in qualifying for the EM 2013 they reached the play-offs for an EM ticket as group runner-up, but failed there: They lost 2-0 to Russia in the first leg and couldn't keep up with a 1-1 draw in the second leg catching up more. In March 2016, the Austrians ranked 25th in the FIFA world rankings after winning the Cyprus Cup in 2016 . After the 2017 European Championships, they achieved their best placement in September 2017 with 20th place. They are now in 22nd place.

The Austrian national soccer team for women was able to qualify for the first time in September 2016 for the final round of a European championship, but never for a world championship. The team met Switzerland, France and Iceland in Group C at the 2017 European Championships , where they emerged as group winners. In the quarter-finals there was a penalty shoot-out against Spain, where it won 5-3 and advanced to the semi-finals. This was Denmark with 3: decide for 0 on penalties. In the election for Austria's athletes of the year 2017, the team was voted Team of the Year.

On July 27, 2020, Irene Fuhrmann became the first women's team boss. She took over the office of Dominik Thalhammer , who switched to LASK .

Algarve Cup

The national team took part in the Algarve Cup three times and played in group C, in which the weaker teams initially compete against each other.

Cyprus Cup

The national team took part for the first time in 2016 and won the tournament by beating Poland 2-1 in the final . In 2017 , the eighth place was taken. The team met an oceanic team ( New Zealand ) for the first time and won 3-0. Austria took part again in 2018 and finished seventh with a win on penalties against Wales . Here came Nina Burger was the first Austrian player to her 100th international . In 2019 the fourth place was taken. The Austrians didn't lose a game. After victories against African champions Nigeria (4: 1) and Slovakia (1: 0) as well as a goalless draw against Belgium , Austria became group winners, but met Belgium again as the worst group winners in the game for third place. Since this again ended goalless, there was a penalty shoot-out, in which five shooters from both teams scored and did not score and it was 3-2 for Belgium in the end.

Record players and goal scorers

As of November 12, 2019

The first goal in the international matches of the Austrian women was scored by the player Christa Zötsch ( 1. DFC Leoben ) on August 25, 1990 in the 63rd minute of the game when the score was 0: 3 in the 1: 5 (0: 2) defeat of Austria in of Switzerland , in Richterswil .

Gertrud Stallinger ( Union Kleinmünchen Linz ) scored four goals in an international match on July 30, 1998 in Austria's 5-0 (1-0) win against Israel at the tournament in Trencin (SK). Austria's record goalscorer Gertrud Stallinger was also successful four times in Austria's 11-0 win against Armenia on May 13, 2003 in Waidhofen an der Ybbs . Manuela Binder , Michaela Schaffranek and Elke Scheubmayr scored three goals each in a game .

Ramona Cito achieved a special feat. On May 27, 1995, she was exchanged for a friendly international match against Slovenia with a score of 8: 1 in the 79th minute and only four minutes later made the final score of 9: 1 for Austria. Nevertheless, it should remain Ramona Cito's only international appearance.

The fastest international goals were scored by two other players: In Austria's 11-0 win against Armenia on May 13, 2003, Marlies Hanschitz was just as successful after 3 minutes as Manuela Binder in the aforementioned 9-1 win against Slovenia. Incidentally, the fastest losing goal was scored by Welshwoman Jones, who sank a penalty against Austria in the second minute of the 1-1 draw on October 24, 1999.

In a 2020 test match against Switzerland, Sarah Puntigam celebrated her 100th international match in an ÖFB dress, making her the second female national team player after Nina Burger to break the 100 international match mark.
