The name is mainly common in Greece, Spain and France. In Germany it was rarely given until the beginning of the 1990s , but then quickly rose to become one of the most popular first names. From 1999 to 2010 Leon was consistently among the ten most frequently given first names for male infants. In 2001, 2006 and 2007 it was in first place in these statistics.
