Ferrario died of tuberculosis at the age of 28 after years of ailing and having to give up cycling. An amateur race, the Targa Libero Ferrario , is also held in Parabiago in his memory. In addition, an intermediate ranking of the Coppa Bernocchi was named after him. In 1973, on the 50th anniversary of Ferrari's World Cup victory in Zurich, the Giro di Lombardia started in Parabiago. The article on Ferrario on the municipality's website is headed: Libero Ferrario è un mito che vive in mezzo a noi. (= "Libero Ferrario is a myth that lives among us.")
