She got her first violin lessons at the age of six. The urge to learn this instrument came from Stirling herself, her parents initially denied her the request because of the costs involved. At the age of 16 she became part of the rock band Stomp On Melvin , to which her four best friends belonged and with whom she made her first experiments in the direction of rock 'n' roll . Also at the age of 16 she began composing her own pieces of music, which she calls "violin rock songs".

In 2007 she opened her YouTube channel Lindsey Stirling , on which she published many of her music videos. Since then, the channel has had over 2.7 billion video views (as of November 11, 2019) and over 12 million subscribers. In 2010, Stirling was a quarter-finalist on the fifth season of America's Got Talent , which made her famous as a hip-hop violinist .
