Logabirum is a district of Leer (East Friesland) in Lower Saxony . It has about 1,250 inhabitants.

prehistory

Logabirum was performed on a running from southwest to northeast ridge of built. The oldest traces of a settlement in Logabirum are only partially preserved. Only two of the 50 grave mounds that were still in existence in 1895, with a diameter between 12 and 20 m, are still preserved in the Siebenbergen district. When the mound was removed in 1935, a not very carefully constructed, five-fold concentric ring of 314 posts was uncovered, the outer diameter of which was about 12.0 m. Burial mounds with postings were built between the early Neolithic and the older Iron Age . The central body burial was slightly deepened. The dating of the hill is unknown.

history

As far as is known today, Logabirum was first mentioned in a document in 1439 as Loghebeerne . However, a significantly older settlement is assumed. When the first brick church was built around 1300, there is said to have been an important settlement. In 1642 Count Ulrich II enfeoffed Colonel Erhard von Ehrentreuter with Logabirum as part of the Loga rule .

Logabirum Church

Logabirum became Lutheran during the Reformation . The Logabirum Church was also visited by Lutherans from Loga and Leer , as there were only Reformed congregations there for a long time. This also included the von Wedel family, the heirs of Colonel von Ehrentreuter and masters of the Loga lordship.

During the Second World War there was a small prisoner-of-war camp in the village, which housed around 20 French people who had to do forced labor on local farms. The village did not suffer any major damage during the war. It took in numerous refugees after the war.

Logabirum has been a district of Leer (East Frisia) since January 1, 1973. While it was previously predominantly agricultural, the place has developed into a residential area since it was incorporated. Despite being part of the city, Logabirum has retained much of its village character.

Origin of name

Before Logabirum got its current name, there were many different spellings and interpretations, such as B. among others:

  • On a tombstone from 1598, you can already see an old spelling: "Loech Beerum".
  • On old maps and documents, Logabirum can also be read as "Logeberum", "Logaeberumi" or "Lochberum".

It will u. a. suspects that "Loghe" or "Loech" comes from Low German or Frisian and means "Ortschaft / Ort / Dorf". "Beerum" or "Berum" should mean forest, that is, village by the forest. According to G. Lohse and H. Thomas, the name should be traced back to the Germanic word "bir" - homestead. So “Berum” would mean “in the courtyards” and Logabirum “in the courtyards near Loga”. Another interpretation should come from the Celtic, namely "Lo" - height, "ge" - green land, "berum" - home of the bears. It should be noted here that the forest in its current form was only planted by the Count's House and is therefore much younger.

In the village chronicle of Logabirum the earliest name "Logheberne" is given.

Attractions

The church, which was probably built around 1300, is one of the landmarks of Logabirum. There is also the only preserved windmill in the city of Leer , which has been owned by the Eiklenborg family since it was built in 1895. Logabirum is also rich in wall hedges . From 1906 to the end of the 1970s there was a zoo in Logabirum known throughout East Friesland as "Onkel Heini" with over 100 animals. The associated restaurant with hall operation continued to operate until 1990.

Sports club

The only sports club in Logabirum is Fortuna, which is based there. Fortuna Logabirum offers a wide variety of sports, including badminton, football, volleyball, karate, running, and dancing. The club is particularly known for its successful basketball department. With eleven different men's and youth teams, it is now one of the 300 largest in Germany and has even provided a regional league team with the first men since 2017.
