Lollapalooza
Lollapalooza is an American music festival featuring alternative rock , rap , and punk rock bands, dance , comedy , fashion, and the arts . While it has been an annual festival series since the first edition in 1991, it has been held exclusively in Grant Park in Chicago since 2005 . Festival offshoots have been established in Chile , Brazil and Argentina since 2011 . In 2015 the Lollapalooza took place for the first time in Europe, on the site of the former Tempelhof Airport in Berlin .
The origin of the term Lollapalooza is unknown. It probably dates from around 1900 and means an outstanding example or something extraordinarily impressive . Founder Perry Farrell chose this name after hearing the term in a Three Stooges short film by actor Moe Howard .
history
Successful start
Lollapalooza was first organized in 1991 by Perry Farrell as a farewell tour for his band Jane's Addiction . Other people from the band acted as partners in the planning and implementation, such as drummer Stephen Perkins , manager Ted Gardner, and the band's two booking agents , Marc Geiger and Don Muller. The line-up of the Lollapalooza festivals was cross-genre and brought z. B. 1991 as diverse artists as Ice-T and the Nine Inch Nails together. Unlike other festivals, the Lollapalooza Festival toured the United States and Canada .
Another concept of the festival was the inclusion of non-musical performances, e.g. B. from freak shows like the Jim Rose Circus or Shaolin monks. There were also art exhibitions, virtual reality games and information stands from political and ecological non-governmental organizations .
Setbacks and temporary end
Lollapalooza initially took place annually until 1997. As headliners for 1998, Farrell's band Jane's Addiction, which was briefly reunited the year before, was initially planned. But when Farrell canceled the band's participation in early 1998, the William Morris Agency , which at the time was responsible for booking the bands for the festival, was unable to hire another attractive headliner at short notice and canceled the festival series completely. The festival series was also canceled in the following years, up to 2003. The cause was u. a. viewed as a general alternative rock crisis .
Attempt at resuscitation (2003-2004)
A new edition of the festival series in 2003 was not very successful because the visitors stayed away due to high ticket prices and strong commercial sponsorship. This development continued in 2004, with the result that the festival was completely canceled in June 2004 due to insufficient ticket sales in advance sales.
Successful restart (since 2005)
However, since 2005 the festival has been held annually again, albeit with a different concept and new management partners with whom Farrell is now working. Instead of a series of festivals in different cities, they limit themselves to a single two or three day event in Grant Park in Chicago. The success of the festival led u. a. on the fact that the 5-year contract concluded in 2007 with the park administration of Chicago was extended early in 2008 to 2018.
reception
The importance of the Lollapalooza festivals for the 1990s has been compared to the importance of the Woodstock festival for the 1960s.
In the seventh annual season of the American cartoon series The Simpsons , the title of episode 3F21 Homerpalooza (German Homer on tour ) is. As a result, the series heroes Homer, Bart and Lisa are spectators at the Hullabalooza Music Festival . In this episode, Cypress Hill , Peter Frampton , The Smashing Pumpkins and Sonic Youth have guest appearances.

In the festival series it happened that individual bands did not take part in all individual dates, partly because of other performance obligations, partly because of illness or discrepancies.
