The Mönchswalder Berg , in Sorbian , is a 447.4 m above sea level. NHN high mountain in the Saxon Upper Lusatia . It is located about three kilometers north of the city of Wilthen in the Bautzen district and belongs to the Lausitzer Bergland . On the mountain there is a mountain hut with a lookout tower and a Deutsche Telekom transmitter mast.
Location and surroundings
The mountain is framed by a chain of villages in the densely populated Spree valley. The butter water flows south of the mountain . In the south, next to the town of Wilthen, there are the villages of Kirschau and Kleinpostwitz , to the east Rodewitz and in the north Obergurig and Großpostwitz . Only to the northwest does the ridge continue without any major settlements to Mount Tschelentsy . In between is the Jägerhauspass ( 383 m ), which is located on the old trade route Böhmischer Steig .
history
For centuries the mountain was called Wetzkischer Wald and Wilthener Berg . Since the 15th century, the forests around the mountain belonged to the Bautzner Gemeiner family as well as a small monastery whose monks founded Mönchswalde on the northern slope of the mountain. This place gave its name to the nearby summit.
When the Bautzener Gebirgsverein was founded in the Spreetal in 1884 , interest in building a mountain hut with a lookout tower grew. On May 1, 1884, the building was finally decided, the financing of which came about with share certificates and donations. After overcoming all kinds of financial cliffs, the inauguration was celebrated on September 23, 1885. Since then, the mountain has been a magnet for hikers and day trippers.
In addition to upgrading the mountain with a water pipe (1896), a social area and a music pavilion, the Pumphut Pavilion was added in the sixties of the twentieth century, the roof of which is modeled on the hat of the legendary Upper Lusatian sorcerer Martin Pumphut .
view
The best view of the mountain is from the tower of the mountain hut . From its viewing platform you have a comprehensive view of a number of mountains in the area, such as the Lausche , the Jedlová (Tannenberg) , the Weifaer Höhe , the Großer Picho and the Valtenberg . If visibility is good, you can see the cooling towers of the Boxberg and Schwarze Pump power plants in the north, the Jizera and Giant Mountains and the Jeschken in the south-east , and some peaks in Saxon Switzerland in the south-west .
