The Mückenburg , also called Mückeburg , near Kirchlotheim , a part of the municipality of Vöhl in the north Hessian district of Waldeck-Frankenberg ( Germany ), is an abandoned spur castle in the Niederkellerwald , of which moats still exist and which is designated as a cultural monument .
Geographical location
The location of the former Mückenburg lies in the Lotheimer Täler natural area, which is part of the Niederkellerwald, between Kirchlotheim, which is around 500 m northeast and beyond the Eder at river kilometer 72.5, and the village of Buchenberg, which is about 1.5 km (as the crow flies ) to the southwest . It is located at about 285 m above sea level. NHN high mountain spur (approx. 40 m above the Eder) of the Weidenberg ( 383.7 m ), a wooded eastern foothills of the Lange Berg ( 413.9 m ). The Goldacker farm is located north below the former castle site in the Eder valley .
History and layout
The mosquito castle was probably built in the 10th century. The Haina monastery (around 1235) is named as the former owner . Remnants of two wall ditches are still present from the former facility secured against the slope .
Tourism and hiking
To the east, past the former Mückenburg, a section of the approximately 6 km long circular hiking trail leads along the Eder, which also leads to the castle on the other side of the river . A branch path climbs to the castle site.
