Mark Shield (born September 2, 1973 in Fortitude Valley , Queensland ) is a former Australian football referee .

The company director chaired his first international match on January 22, 1997 ( New Zealand versus Norway ) and was FIFA referee from January 1, 1999. He was a referee during the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea and currently holds the record of the youngest referee in a World Cup final (28 years at the 2002 World Cup ).

At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Shield led two games: Tunisia against Saudi Arabia 2: 2 (1: 0) and Iran against Angola 1: 1 (0: 0) . During the soccer Asian Cup 2007 he directed a total of five games, including a. also the final between Iraq and Saudi Arabia (1-0).

After the 2007-08 A-League season, Shield retired from his active career. The denial of two penalties in favor of the defeated Central Coast Mariners team was controversial . This led to an assault by Danny Vukovic against Shield, which consequently punished Shield with a red card, which brought Vukovic a very long ban and also made participation in the Olympic Games in Beijing impossible. At the beginning of the new season, Shield whistled one more game in the A-League for the full time as a farewell game.

Shield remained loyal to the sport and became a functionary and later chairman of the referees in the Australian Football Association. In 2012 he left this position to focus entirely on his business.
