Čater made his World Cup debut on March 9, 2013 in the giant slalom in Kranjska Gora . He won his first World Cup point as 30th in the traditional Lauberhorn downhill run in January 2014. At the World Championships in Vail / Beaver Creek , he finished 25, 29 and 20 in downhill, super-G and combined. In the Super-G, in December 2015 at the same location, he was classified among the top 20 of a World Cup race for the first time. In 2016 he won the Slovenian national championship in Super-G and Giant Slalom . Then he got two more top 20 placements in the World Cup, where he initially achieved his best result as sixteenth in the combination of Santa Caterina . In the combination of Wengen he was able to improve again and came in ninth, with which he reached his first place in the top 10. He finished the World Championship in St. Moritz with a 13th place in the combined and a 17th place in the Super-G. Towards the end of the season he achieved his best ever World Cup result with sixth place in the Kvitfjell Super-G .

In the 2017/18 season he was able to maintain the level of the pre-winter and scored points in all of the first four Super-G. He achieved his best placings with an eleventh downhill rank in Wengen and seventh place in the combination of Bormio . At his first Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang , he started in four disciplines, but a 19th place in the downhill remained his only countable result. In January 2019, he surprisingly finished eighth in the Lauberhorn downhill run with a high start number and thus achieved his best result in this discipline.
