Several freight railroad lines for the Union Pacific Railroad (UP) and the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) meet in Mason City . The Iowa Traction Railroad (IATR), a shortline railroad company , is based in Mason City. It operates a 21 km long line that is electrified with 600 V direct current via an overhead contact line.
