Maurice Tillieux (born August 7, 1921 in Huy , Belgium , † January 31, 1978 in Tours , France ) was a French-speaking Belgian cartoonist , author and writer.

biography

At the age of 14, Tillieux published his first cartoon drawings. He began his career in 1936 with drawings and illustrations for the Dupuis magazine Le Moustique . He initially used various pseudonyms such as John Cliff, Ronald Scott, and Jill Morrison. Since his work as a draftsman did not (yet) bring the hoped-for successes, he began writing detective novels in the early 1940s.

From 1944 onwards he devoted himself more to drawing activities. His work has now appeared regularly in various magazines such as Le Moustique, Bimbo, Jeep, Blondine and Spirou. During this phase he began producing his first comics.

The first success was the series "Felix", a detective comic , published from 1947 to 1956 on Héroïc-Albums , a Belgian comic magazine published by Fernand Cheneval. In 1956 Tillieux switched to the competitor paper Spirou . There he began a new detective series called "Gil Jourdan" (German: "Jeff Jordan"), which was practically the continuation of "Felix" with changed main characters. In an obituary for her father, however, his daughter said that the series had never really satisfied him because - unlike Felix - it was tailored to a wider, younger audience.

»Jeff Jordan« became his most famous series, for which he created a total of 26 adventures of varying lengths. The stories appeared in a total of 16 albums (German at Carlsen ), of which Tillieux drew the first 12 completely himself. For the last four albums, Tillieux only provided sketches, and his assistant Gos did the finalartwork.

Another successful series was »César« (German: »Cäsar«) which, in contrast to the semi-realistic Jeff Jordan, was designed as a half-page gag strip ("Funny"). Since 1966 he was also the author of the series Marc Lebut et son voisin , which in Germany as Marcus and Meister Müller or Jupp Heister and Herr Jemine appeared.

After initially writing scenarios primarily for stories he had drawn himself, Tillieux later worked to an ever greater extent as a scenarioist for other draftsmen. Among other things, he developed stories for the series Harry and Platte (by Will ), Natascha (by Walthéry ) and Yoko Tsuno (by Roger Leloup ).

On January 31, 1978, Maurice Tillieux was killed in a car accident in Nice .

meaning

He is considered a co-founder and is also one of the most popular and successful representatives of the École Marcinelle . This traditional Belgian "comic school" is named after the town of Marcinelle near Charleroi , where the Dupuis publishing house is based. Illustrators such as André Franquin ( Spirou and Fantasio ), Peyo ( The Smurfs ) and Morris ( Lucky Luke ) published in his magazine " Spirou " .

Tillieux was a master at translating crime stories into the imagery of comics. It stands for well-conceived and coherent actions in which humorous sequences are combined with exciting passages to create captivating adventures, which are implemented in atmospherically coherent illustrations. Its backyards and roof landscapes are legendary. Typical of Tilleux are his dry, humorous dialogues, which sometimes seem to be borrowed from movies.
