The Meerrettich-Museum is a museum about the horseradish in Baiersdorf ( Middle Franconia , Bavaria ).

history

The area between Erlangen and Forchheim has been a center of horseradish cultivation since the 15th century . In the 19th century, the vegetable stalks from the Krenland in wooden barrels were exported to Vienna via the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal . They served as an ingredient in boiled beef and were needed in large quantities. The museum was created from an initiative of the Baiersdorf Heimatverein and the Schamel family. The foundation took place on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of the Schamel company, the opening took place on April 11, 1997 in Judengasse 11.

In the museum, which is the only one of its kind in the world, the visitor receives comprehensive information about the horseradish, from the earlier production up to the modern times. In addition to the possible uses of horseradish, the history of cultivation and processing is shown and information is given about the heat and the essential substances and vitamins contained in horseradish . There are also exhibits on the women in costume , called Krenweibern and its piggyback baskets , and the male Krenhausierern that the vegetables brought to Munich and sold on doors and markets. Samples are also sold in a museum shop.
