action

Mary Smith lives in sheltered but boring circumstances under the thumb of her respected father, Judge Horace Smith, whose desire is to become President of the United States. Only Uncle Hannibal brings some joy into her luxury life. One day when he takes her to a gaming room, it is hit by a police raid. However, the prominent Mary remains unrecognized. Nevertheless, Horace's father sends her into exile in Palm Beach to avoid a scandal. There she is with her chaperones Katie and Elly.

Mary falls in love with the rodeo star Stretch Willoughby from Montana . However, Stretch is too shy to take notice. Katie and Ellen advise her on how to get a man's attention. When she makes up a story of her hard life, the cowboy bites. She eventually escapes with him on a ship. The captain of the ship trusts the young couple. Everything seems to be going well until Mary receives news that her father is coming to visit her in Palm Beach.

She leaves her young husband with the excuse of a family crisis. In Palm Beach, she explains herself to her father, who is accordingly angry. Nevertheless, he asks her to come with him to an important meeting. Meanwhile, Stretch is worried about his wife and goes to Palm Beach. He bursts into the politically important dinner party and learns of Mary's true identity. Stretch doesn't know how to behave at all here and makes a mockery of the dinner guests.

In Mary, only evoke deeper feelings for stretch. Uncle Hannibal is once again Mary's savior in need. He is able to convince Judge Smith of the sincerity of the young couple's feelings. Judge Smith realizes that his daughter's happiness is more important than his political ambitions. Stretch eventually returns to his homeland in Montana with the entire Smith family . There Judge Smith learns how beautiful simple country life can be.

Reviews

"Lively staged and well-acted comedy with a dash of naive social criticism that is pleasantly entertaining as a modern fairy tale."

background

The screenplay by SN Behrman and Sonya Levien , on which thirteen other screenwriters worked, was based on a story by Frank R. Adams and Leo McCarey .

William Wyler , the original director, was fired by producer Samuel Goldwyn for repeating too many scenes. HC Potter took over the director's chair . When the shooting schedule was exceeded, he had to be replaced by Stuart Heisler , as he had already committed to another film project. Only HC Potter was named as director in the opening and closing credits.

The United Artists film made it to German cinemas in 1950 as My Man, the Cowboy . In this dubbed version, Gary Cooper got the voice of Arnold Marquis . In the television version broadcast in 1978, Gary Cooper received the voice of Hartmut Reck .
