Michel Vaarten

Michel Vaarten (born January 17, 1957 in Turnhout , Antwerp) is a former Belgian cyclist , world champion and current coach.

Life

As an amateur, Michel Vaarten was eight times Belgian champion in various track disciplines sprint , points race , 1 km time trial , derny race and omnium between 1976 and 1979 , thus proving his versatility. In 1976 he also won a silver medal in the 1 km time trial at the Olympic Games in Montreal .

1979 Vaarten went over to the professionals and immediately took third place in the six-day race in Gent (with René Pijnen ); a little later he won in Antwerp (with Pijnen and Albert Fritz ). In the same year he took a third place in the sprint at the UCI track world championships in Amsterdam . In 1980 he and Pijnen became European champions in two-man team driving .

In the years that followed, Vaarten drove good races on the track and on the road. In 1986 he was world champion in Keirin and vice world champion in points race in Colorado Springs . In 1990 he was able to become vice world champion in Keirin at the World Track Championships in Maebashi . Eleven times, more than any other non-Japanese driver, he also took part in the Keirin series in Japan and was very popular there.

Michel Vaarten worked as a trainer for the Belgian Cycling Federation until July 2010. In championships, he also acts as Derny - pacemaker . In 2006 he led the Belgian driver Iljo Keisse in Ballerup / Denmark and in 2009 the Belgian driver Kenny De Ketele to the Derny European Championship in Ghent / Belgium , with whom he repeated this success in 2015 on the Hannover-Wülfel cycle race track .

Vaarten is a son-in-law of the Belgian cycling idol Achiel Buysse .
