Michael Andrew "Mike" D'Antoni (born May 8, 1951 in Mullens , Wyoming County , West Virginia ) is an American - Italian basketball coach and former player. He was named NBA Coach of the Year in the 2004/05 and 2016/17 seasons .

Mike D'Antoni was honored in May 2008 as one of the 50 great personalities of basketball in Europe . The award was made by the EuroLeague during an official ceremony in the Palacio de Deportes de la Comunidad de Madrid in Madrid .

career

Player career

D'Antoni played from 1970 to 1973 for the college team at Marshall University . At times his brother Dan was his trainer there. With 659 basket assists, he was at the top of the Marshall best list when he left it in 1973. In 1997 he was accepted into the college's sports hall of fame .

He played in the NBA for the Kansas City Kings from 1973 to 1975 . After nine games in the 1975/76 season , he moved to the ABA for the Spirits of St. Louis .

In 1976 he played two games for the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA, then he moved to Italy for Olimpia Milano . There he played until 1990 and won five Italian championships , twice the Italian Cup , twice the European Cup and once each the Korać Cup and the Intercontinental Cup . During this time he scored 5573 points in the league, which is a club record to this day.

With the Italian national team he also took part in the European Championship in 1989 .

Coaching career

Italian

As a coach, D'Antoni stayed with Milano until 1994 and was there again winner of the Korać Cup. He then moved to Benetton Treviso , with this club he won the European Cup and the Italian Cup in 1995 and the championship in 1997.

NBA

In 1998 D'Antoni took over for the first time the head coach of an NBA team, the Denver Nuggets , which he coached in the 1998/99 season. In 2001 he returned to Treviso and again led the club to the Italian championship.

Between 2003 and 2008, D'Antoni coached the Phoenix Suns and reached the Conference finals in his first two full seasons, 2004/05 and 2005/06 . In Phoenix as well as in New York and Los Angeles, his brother Dan was an assistant coach on his staff.

From the 2008/09 NBA season he coached the New York Knicks until he resigned from his coaching position on March 14, 2012.

On November 12, 2012, he was introduced as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers . On April 30, 2014, he resigned as coach of the Lakers.

In December 2015 D'Antoni was hired as "Associate Head Coach" with the Philadelphia 76ers and supported trainer Brett Brown in his duties.

At the beginning of June 2016, the Houston Rockets brought D'Antoni as their new coach. D'Antoni took 55 wins this season with the Rockets and came third in the Western Conference. In the playoffs, the Rockets were subject to the San Antonio Spurs in the second playoff round. D'Antoni was named NBA Coach of the Year for his end-of-season accomplishments .
