Mikel Nieve Iturralde (born May 26, 1984 in Leitza , Navarra ) is a Spanish cyclist .
Career
Nieve joined the Spanish Continental Team Orbea in 2008 . In his first year with this team, he finished third in the overall class at the Spanish stage race Cinturó de l'Empordà .
In 2009 he moved to the UCI ProTeam Euskaltel-Euskadi . At the Vuelta a España 2010 , he secured the stage win on the mountainous 16th section. At the Giro d'Italia 2011 he won the queen's stage single-handedly and, like at the Vuelta a España 2011, reached 10th place in the overall standings. In 2012 he again reached 10th place at the Giro d'Italia 2012 . At the Tour de Suisse , he was fifth overall. In the 2014 season he won a stage of the Critérium du Dauphiné .
At the Vuelta a España 2015 , Nieve took over the leadership role after the departure of Sky captain Chris Froome and placed eighth for the first time since 2012 in the top ten of a three-week tour of the country. At the Giro d'Italia 2016 he won a stage and the mountain classification .
For the 2018 season he moved to the Mitchelton-Scott team . At the Giro d'Italia , on his 34th birthday, he won the penultimate stage after attacking from an escape group and reaching the finish as a soloist with a lead of 2:16 minutes over the day's runner-up. In the Tour de France he was overtaken by his former team-mate Geraint Thomas on the 11th stage to La Rosière 350 meters from the finish as the last remaining member of the breakaway group and finally finished the stage in fifth.
