José Manuel Fuente

José Manuel Fuente Lavandera (born September 30, 1945 in Limanes , † July 18, 1996 in Oviedo ) was a Spanish cyclist . His nickname was El Tarangu , which in Asturian means a strong man full of character.

Athletic career

Fuente was one of the most successful mountain climbers of his time. He won the Maglia Verde of the Giro d'Italia from 1971 to 1974, the mountain classification of the Vuelta a España in 1972 and the mountain classification of the Tour de Suisse in 1973 . In addition, he won numerous mountain stages in the Tour, the Giro and the Vuelta. He was also very successful in the overall classifications of the major tours . He won the Vuelta in 1972 and 1974 . In 1973 he became the first Spaniard to win the Tour de Suisse with a lead of 4:45 minutes over Donato Giuliani. Third place in the Tour de France in 1973 and second place in the Giro d'Italia in 1972 was his best result. In the Giro in particular, he was one of Eddy Merckx's biggest competitors .

In 1976, a severe kidney infection forced him to end his career. Fuente died on July 18, 1996 from the long-term effects of this disease. In order to keep the memory of him alive, the Trofeo José Manuel Fuente Tarangu , a difficult race for juniors in his native Asturias , was created after Fuentes death .

During his time as an active driver, Fuente drove for the Kas team .

Professional

After retiring as a racing driver, he was the sports director of the CLAS team.
